Words to live by

If it is to be, it is up to me.

Happy Birthday, Mama!

Jack's homework speaks for itself

All Jack wants for Christmas is...

That's right - both of his front teeth have come out since Thanksgiving. The Tooth Fairy left him $1.38 in change for the first tooth. Wyatt said "WOW. What are you going to buy wiff all vat money, Jackie?" Jack answered "I am going to wait till I am grown up to spend it, Wyatt."

The Tooth Fairy was a little more generous for tooth #2. She left him two dollar bills. That boy was super excited - though he still opted to put them in his piggy bank and save them. Good choice, buddy!

Putting up the tree

Jack has been doing very well with his piano lessons and will be participating in his first recital Dec 16! He has been working on his Christmas songs: We Three Kings and Up On The Housetop and he is getting pretty good. When we were putting up the tree last weekend I asked Jack if he would play his recital songs for us. It was pretty cool to have someone plinking out Christmas music on the piano while we put up decorations. That would be a fun tradition to start... We will see.

Thanksgiving day

Thanksgiving day started off with my fellas feeding the birds and ended with Wyatt and Noah pretending to sleep in the closet. They had me fooled until they both started giggling at the same moment.

Super Secret Spy Keys

Wyatt was really into being a spy and a spy pilot for a few weeks. He told me when he grew up he was going to put me in his plane and fly me someplace really nice. Then he was going to take all the boys in his family and fly them to someplace fun. then he gave John and I our Super Secret Spy Keys (markers) so we could be spies too.

A Paper Puppet Show

So we went to see the Go Dog, Go! at the Paul Mesner Puppets and the boys asked if we could buy the dog puppet kits. We did and the fellas spent a day putting them together and making their own puppet show all while I was at work. I'm jealous!

Cub scout!

Jack is officially a Tiger Cub! I won't tell you about having to sit through the terribly long and boring meeting/awards presentation in which Jack earned various beads and bagde things as well as read the instructions for the advancement and retreat of the color guard. (He looks exasperated about reading these instructions, but it is just a bad picture. He thought it was pretty cool to direct the color guard.)

Go, Dog, Go!

When Jack was just beginning to learn to read, I had him read Go, Dog, Go! every night. He was very frustrated with words and I thought if we could just hit the same material over and over, he would start recognizing words. I thought for sure he would hate that book by the end, but he still loves it and when he heard that Paul Mesner's puppet company was doing Go, Dog, Go! He wanted to go! (And yes, I let them wear their Haloween costumes to the show.)

Not only did we see the show, but John took the boy scout troupe to the American Royal Rodeo this week. He told Jack they were going to see some mutton bustin' and Jack was all excited to try it out. After seeing the kids ride the sheep he wants nothing to do with the bustin of muttons.

Happy Halloween

Wyatt has informed me that when he grows up he is going to change his name to Luigi and he knows that will hurt my feelings but he will just stay and live with me so it will be better then.

Wyatt has also decided that Jack will grow up and change his name to Mario but he will not live with us. Wy has decided that we are going to get an orange dog, name him Flynn and his nickname will be Luigi. He doesn't see a problem with the dog being called Luigi and his own name being Luigi because it won't be until his is GROWN UP that he will change his name to Luigi.

"Mommy, look how MUCH candy we got!!!" (I'm glad they think this is a lot - I saw kids who were struggling to hold their buckets and this is the two boys combined...) Believe it or not, the boys were the ones to call a halt to the Trick-or-Treating. "My legs is sooo tired! Can we go home, now?"

The Cartographers Owen

Wyatt is working very hard each day on his penmanship. He practices letters and numbers and stairs. I can't believe how nice his numbers look. And his stairs - well they speak for themselves. The stairs represented here are (start in the lower left hand corner) stairs that John can use to go up to his bedroom, go down to his bed and sleep. Then he can get up and go down to his breakfast. After breakfast, he can go down the outside stairs and get to his car. I have told John to keep this as a map so he can find his bed, breakfast and car.

Not sure what brought it on, but Jack had a burning desire this week to create a map of the world. Look closely, he put in Kansas! (OK, Daddy helped.)

Puppy Scouts

So little Wy has been to a Cub Scout Family Campout, a Cub Scout Haunted Trails and a couple Den Meetings. He has decided that he is a "Puppy Scout - because I'm not full grown yet"

Silly Mommy

I was heading out to a wedding last weekend when Wy and I started making faces at each other. He insisted I let him take a picture and he giggled so much over this one that I thought I would share it with you.

John's Dresser Garden

John Owen, John Owen, how does your dresser grow?
With corn cob pipes and piggy bank eyes and Popsicle sticks all in a row!
And maybe a few walnuts, some pens, keys, a peep, electrical outlet safety cover, a few boy scout badges, a multi-tool and you haven't even seen my junk drawer yet!!!

Mii

Wy likes to do homework with Jack after school. We have a few dry erase boards with numbers, letters and shapes. I am surprised at how good his lettering has become. Jack is doing really well with his piano lessons. He likes to play his homework each morning and we hardly ever have to remind him to practice in the evening. He plays the pages on his homework sheet, then he goes back and plays the songs I like and he will often just sit down to make music - he doesn't bang on the piano like a lot of kids do, he experiments with patterns and moods. It is really quite fascinating.

Wyatt has become very contemplative when answering questions, he says "Hmm, let me see" or "Let me think about it..."
"Wyatt, how was your day?"
"Hmmm, let me see...."

He has also recently started running around saying "A goo and a bee!" I wish I knew what that meant, but I have no idea and Wyatt isn't telling. I ask him and he just smiles and says it again - waving his arm like a king.

The boys love to play the Wii. Jack's favorite thing to do is create mii. He has already made a mii for everyone in his class - in case they come over for a play-date. Wyatt is only interested in his mii - I'm not sure if he thinks his mii is funny, if this is how he sees himself or what but I had to take a picture of it for you...

Fall Fun

I have been in rehearsals all week so I see the boys in the morning and then their sleeping faces at night. John has been spending some guy time in the yard with them this weekend!

When you don't want to eat it

Jack said "Mommy, when you don't like it, you don't like to smell it and you don't want to eat it, you just do vis."

Take My Picture!

When Jack registered for Kindergarden, I took his picture by the big brick sign thing in the front of the building. When he went in for his first day of school this year I thought I would try to be clever and take his picture there every year to measure his growth. (We'll see if I can remember to do that or not.) Now every time we walk past the sign, Wyatt wants me to take HIS picture in front of it. Unfortunately every time we are there, the sun is too bright for him.

I like #2. "When I say 'Dance! You better dance!"

Ice Cream at the Park

Wyatt's day care had a field trip to the park recently. Jack and I met the group at the playground and just as we were heading out, the ice cream van guy showed up. The boys were so excited that I couldn't say no. They both picked Batman ice cream.

I wouldn't let them get in the car until I wiped them down with a slew of wipes from the car. Thank God I had wipes. (Wyatt was already a filthy mess from the over damp sandbox. The backside of his pants looked like he had messed himself then there was blue sticky ice cream residue everywhere - GROSS!!!!!

Peanut Butter Face

The fun things you get to do when you hang out with Wyatt's mom - like smash your face in your peanut butter sandwich!

Tornado music

Jack and Wyatt asked me if I wanted to listen to Tonado music. I said "Why not?"

What I love is how seriously Jack is taking the music. Wyatt is fully into it. And then he is done. I love how he just leaves at the end.

The hole in my ceiling

I was cooking or cleaning or cleaning something in the kitchen one night last week and I heard the sound of running water. Interestingly enough, it wasn't coming from the kitchen. I start looking around and I hear it coming from the dining room. Looking and looking it took me a minute to spot the water GUSHING down the dining room wall. I FLEW upstairs yelling the whole way to turn off the water. The culprit turns out to be the copper pipe that had completely corroded.

So Dad & John cut big holes in the dining room ceiling this weekend and replaced sections of pipe. I was a little concerned about another greenish area on one of the pipes and said as much to John. He said "This part right here?" and tapped it with his pocket knife. The tip of the knife went right through the pipe so they replaced that section too. Thank goodness I was around or they would have put the ceiling back up and THAT section would have corroded through too! My work here is done.

Anyway, here is the ceiling:

Dad says the next step is to pull down the wood beam to see how much mold or whatever is up there. I see no quick end to the hole in my ceiling. At least I don't have to fix it myself or hire someone to do it.

We have a bobcat. Rarr!

Piano, soccer and scouts oh my! If you want to get together with Jack, you just about have to make an appointment.

Jack is now a Boy Scout. Or rather, he is a Tiger Scout - or a Bobcat. I don't understand it though John has explained it 14 times. It boils down to he is now in scouts AND believe it or not, John has volunteered to be the den leader for Jack's class. I nearly fell over. I made them pose in the front yard wearing all their gear.

I have been trying to figure out how to put a link here so you can purchase Boy Scout popcorn from Jack but it looks like I have to send an e-mail from the popcorn website. Don't worry - I will be hitting you up soon!
So when do we get to the funy part? Glad you asked: John and Jack came home from their first Den meeting and we asked Jack how it all went. He said "Oh, it was just our first boring meeting."
The Scouts had a camp out last weekend. Unfortunately I was not able to go but John took both boys. I don't know who all he sent this to, but here is a little shakedown of their overnight campout...
The Camp-out was great, the boys were super excited, there was a Camp Fire, an hour long show of skits and songs, dances and a story from the District Leader. He goes by "Crazy Dave", and looks like he has been in the Scouts since 1922. But he told a great story of a young Indian Brave who went out alone into the Wilderness to learn about Nature. Then we all said goodnight and while walking back across the field, Jack and Wyatt got to see every single star, they had NEVER seen that before. We zippered our sleeping bags to make one big pouch, so the three of us settled in, Jack was asleep in maybe ten minutes. He explored the sleeping pouch from the top corner by his head, all the way to the corner by Wyatt's head, and then went back again, (with long pauses at the gap between the zipper start/ends), and then promptly fell asleep with in a minute. Wyatt was Mr. Flippy McFlipperton for maybe 45 minutes. About 3 times, Wyatt had tried to sit up, or maybe flop an arm up, I'm not sure, and then relaxed and fell asleep, but teh sleeping bag got pushed up and chilly air whooshed into the pouch, and I got all cold again, and tried to scoot both boys against me, but they would roll back away into their nice warm side pockets of the sleeping bag, which would make tunnels along both sides of me - which drew in more cold air again. sigh... Anyways, so I curled up next to Wyatt and then dragged Jacks side of the sleeping pouch over to us to close up the gaps - !
About 6:00 in the morning, Wyatt woke me up, straight armed push-up on my chest, BEAMING with joy that we had finally Camped! The boys have been after me to camp since January 1. Then we got our shoes on and went to the other side of the little levee and peed in the grass. That was fun I guess, Wyatt has great joy in that!
We got back to the tent and woke up Jack, piddled around for a few minutes, and then we watched the sunrise, they hadn't done that either. Later, we had breakfast and then had to pack it all up and go meet Amy at the Soccer Field for a game.

It is late and I need to go to bed,
Love you all,
John II

Tards and butterflies

We were eating dinner and Devlyn says "When we are early to school my teacher givesus a ticket and calls us 'Early Birds' but when we are late she calls us 'Tards'. I said "I don't think she calls you 'Tards.'" Devlyn looked at me and yelled "Yes she does!"

Our next door neighbor brought us a jar of caterpillars. He said they were going to make their cocoons any day and next August they would emerge as butterflies. He thought the kids would get a kick out of watching the process. He had great timing because 2 days later all 4 caterpillars made their cocoons. He was only partially right about when they would hatch. The boys and I got home one day last week and they started screaming with excitement. I went into the living room to find the butterfly jar on the floor with a butterfly flopping around inside. (I think the cats tried to get the poor little guy and batted the jar around the dining room floor until they gave up...)We were just heading outside to set the little guy free when Jessica came home. She held the butterfly on her hand for a few minutes but made me take it off her because it's feet felt super creepy!

Two days after that ANOTHER one of the butterflies hatched. This one was orange and released before I made it home.

Merle Hagger

Jack & Wyatt were singing something in the backseat and I asked them what in the world they were singing. Jack pipes up with "It's Merle Hagger, Mom" He could just as easily have said "Are you stupid or what?" I wanted to turn around and say to him "Yeah? Well, it's Merle HaggarD - so there!" I didn't. I just let him think I was dumb.

He's got the whole world in his hands

Play dough can occupy a boy for a long time! Wy made the world. The blue is the sky and the purple is where we live.

Spaghetti Western

Jack cornered me in the kitchen last weekend and asked for a long noodle. Being the cool mom I am, I just gave him a spaghetti noodle, no questions asked. He grinned and stuck it in his mouth.

Back to school 2011

First day of school. Jack couldn't understand WHY the girls were so happy - he was comfy and cozy in bed when I so RUDELY woke him up to get ready for school.

My PLAN is to take a picture of Jack in front of this sign every year and we can watch him grow!!! I will have to look back to see if I posted it in the blog, but I took his picture here last year too.

Every year the school has a balloon launch after an all school mass. I was so happy that I could go this year. The kids were super excited to send the balloons off into the sky. They even had extras so little brothers like Wyatt could send a balloon into the world.

Doesn't this just make you happy?

No wonder these boys are smiling.

Monkey kisses

Happy birhtday, Daddy!!!

Jack calls me "Mama" now. It makes me sad that he isn't calling me "Mommy" but the way he calls me "Mama" is so very sweet. Now Wyatt is also calling me "Mama". It is too soon for me to not be Mommy anymore!!!! I asked Jack a few days ago if he would sometimes call me Mommy. He looked at me and said "Ok...Mama." STINKER!!!

Wyatt now likes to give me Monkey kisses. I opt for Monkey air kisses...

I have been in rehearsals the past three weeks. Since I don't get home till after the boys are in bed, I have been taking advantage of my morning time at home with Wyatt to have some special time with him. We have been having wii time each morning. We have had lunch time picnics on the kitchen floor. We have spent some cuddle time together and we have deep conversations while I massage his leg. We talk about things like cars and trucks, trains and dogs, Super Mario Brothers and how to jump on the bad guys to beat them. (He is trying to help me with my game.) As much as I like our private time in the mornings, I will be glad to get back to being at home in the evenings next week.

What else is new? Jack has started another season of soccer.

He has also joined the Boy Scouts and is now an official Bobcat. John has signed on as the Den Leader so I will let you all know when the popcorn sales begin (think 2 days!)

The school auction is right around the corner, so if you want to buy a ticket to the auction (I am in charge of the miscellaneous committee) or if you want to buy a raffle ticket for the car that is being raffled off, drop me a line! We have also started the student's first fundraiser of the year. They are selling chocolates and wrapping paper through a company called Innisbrook. Needless to say, we are up to our eyeballs in selling things. E-mail, call or facebook me if you are interested in contributing to the fundraising efforts!

Lastly - for anyone who wants to see a bit of a weekly progression on Wy's leg in pictures - you can look to the sidebar on the left of the screen and click on shutterfly under linky dinks. Wy's pictures are in the album "Wy runned over by a car."

"Did you know I got runned over by a car?"

I think most of you know that the last two weeks have been insane. Devon called about 4 a.m. on the 24th (it is NEVER good when you get a phone call at 4 a.m.)She was telling me she had just gotten back from a concert and couldn't get into her apartment because part of it was on fire and the police wouldn't let her in -and- she couldn't get a hold of her kids who were IN the apartment. I grabbed Mom and Dad and off we went. A few minutes before we got to the apartment Devon called to say Jess had woken up, figured out what was happening and got the kids out safely. We are VERY fortunate at the fire happened 3 doors down from the girls' 3rd floor apartment and traveled down instead of towards the neighboring apartments on that floor. Unfortunately their apartment is unlivable. We brought Devon and the gang over to our house until their living arrangements can get figured out.
My power steering went out the next day so on Monday John took my car in to the shop. When Wy and I picked up John Wy exclaimed "Mommy! Daddy! I can see the Eiffel Tower!"

My car wasn't going to be ready until Tuesday morning so I borrowed Mom's car and took her to Work Tuesday and John took the boys to day care. I was on the highway when I got a terrifying phone call from John. I could hear Wyatt screaming in the background and a woman saying "Keep him still". John couldn't hear me over all the commotion and finally told me I needed to get to the sitter's house immediately. Of course the section of highway I was on is under construction with no exit from 103rd to 75th street and it was the morning rush hour...
When I finally made it to the sitter's there were 2 fire trucks, 2 ambulances and 3 cop cars surrounding her house. Paramedics were telling me they needed to take John to Overland Park regional because they were worried about his seriously low blood pressure and they needed to take Wyatt to Children's Mercy downtown. I knew I was going with Wyatt but I froze in a logistical nightmare of cars (mine was in the show and now we were leaving both John's truck and my mom's car at the sitter's house) and what I was going to do about the 11:00 show that morning. There was a nice lady who said "Why don't we get your things so you can go with your son?" So that's what we did. Another paramedic stopped me before getting into the ambulance to talk to me about how Wyatt needed me and would react based on my reactions so he needed me to keep cool. Now I'm completely freaked out because I still have no idea what has happened. The EMTs helped me into the ambulance and Wy was velcroed within an inch of his life to a board and gurney. The ladies in the ambulance explained Wyatt had been backed over by a car and that shortly after the emergency team arrived John's blood pressure took a nose dive.
I could go on and on about everything but to give a quick summary: another mother was leaving the day care and backing her car out. John had Jack's hand and Wy was between them. They were trying to walk away from the car but it bumped John and then backed over Wyatt.
John convinced the EMTs he did not need to go to the hospital so they hung out with him until his BP was stable. Wy has 2 broken collar bones, a fractured rib on the right, a tiny puncture in the right lung (which has probably closed up by now), a little bit of air in the intestine (which worked its way out), road rash on his left ear, left lower back, left calf and a huge horrible wound on his right knee. The medical team decided the knee needed to be treated as a 3rd degree burn since there was no skin left to close the wound. The E.R. kept us over night to monitor the lung, intestine and knee. (This is a picture I took of Wy and I cuddling in the hospital bed. He was upset and even after meds couldn't settle down so I slipped in behind him and he went right to sleep.)

We saw the burn unit the next morning and they said the knee was bad enough we could stay a 2nd night, which we did. The following morning the ladies in the burn unit showed John and I how to care for Wy's knee and we were discharged on Thursday.

Things were going OK at home but cleaning the knee was very upsetting to everyone. By Sunday night John and I just weren't sure we were doing it properly and called the burn unit who asked us to come in the following afternoon. They told us were were taking care of the knee properly but that the tissue that needed to come (escar) out was too thick so they were going to have to do it in the hospital. After an out patient treatment they let us know they were going to have to remove the escar in surgery and do a skin graft.

Wednesday was a long day of waiting. The surgical burn team had a patient already scheduled on Wednesday and it was a situation that could take 2 hours or 4 hours. I think it was the kid in the room next to ours and that child was gone all day. I thought for sure we were going to be bumped to Thursday but at 6:00 a few nurses came in to say they were going to take Wy to the O.R. in the next 5 minutes. Wow! Wy got in for surgery Wednesday evening around 7 and was in recovery longer than he was in surgery! The Dr's did a full thickness skin graft from the groin (they removed an entire section of skin instead of scraping off the top few layers), stitched everything up and put Wy in a splint from his upper thigh to his toes. They also sent us home with a walker as he isn't supposed to put any weight on his right leg until we get the OK at his follow up next week. The next morning he looked at his nurse and said "Did you know I got runned over by a car?"

The nurses told me they were happy Wy was healing but they wanted to keep him around for a little bit longer. He is definitely a favorite and one they will miss.

When we got home and settled in Jack wanted to be as helpful as possible. He walked up to Wyatt and said "Wyatt, I will get any toy you want and bring it to you. I will do anything you want." He paused for a moment "But I won't pull down my pants and my underwear and show you my butt." This was said in all seriousness - as if he were just laying down his boundaries.

John and Wy were talking later that night and Wyatt said "Daddy, my bones are pretty strong, right?" John said "Yes, they are buddy." Wyatt thought for a second then said "But not when they get runned over by a car, right, Daddy?" "That's right, buddy." John said.

Wyatt asks everyone who comes to visit "Did you know I got runned over by a car?"

We have a follow up appointment for the collar bones and rib on Tuesday then we are back again on Thursday for a follow up on the knee.
I'm grateful Wy is safe and all of his injuries will heal. I'm grateful for the concern, prayers, love and support from my friends and family. I'm also grateful for the incredible spirit that lives in my unstoppable boy.

I'm sure I missed things you want to know - post a query and I will fill in the details. I will keep you posted as we head down the healing highway.
Love and blessings,
amy & the gang.
